Rutgers has found its new men’s head basketball coach as Steve Pikiell will replace Eddie Jordan as first reported by Steve Politi of NJ Advanced Media. Pikiell just finished an impressive season as the head coach of Stony Brook, which ended with a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to Kentucky.
Pikiell led Stony Brook to a 26-7 season and has finished his run there with an overall record of 192-156 which dates back to the 2005 season. Since the outset of the coaching search, Scarlet Nation reported that Pikiell was a favorite of RU athletic director Pat Hobbs, slotted behind initial front runner Dan Hurley.
Hurley turned down the job and withdrew his name on Wednesday, opening the door for Hobbs to pursue Pikiell, who has built Stony Brook into a solid program. Pikiell's Stony Brook program posted three NIT appearances and two CBI appearances in the previous six seasons before this year’s NCAA Tournament run.
Pikiell is 48 years of age and was a college point guard at UConn from 1987-91 where he played under legendary coach Jim Calhoun. Pikiell was also named American East Coach of the Year for 2016.
The hire is not official just yet, although Rutgers is expected to make a formal announcement once the move is approved by the Board of Governors, which will likely happen on Monday
