Early Wednesday afternoon, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights landed a pledge and signature from defensive lineman Devin Baldwin out of Southfield, Michigan. Baldwin is a 5.6, three-star recruit who recently announced his decommitment from Western Michigan after being verbally committed for almost six months.
We here at The Knight Report spoke with Baldwin regarding his decision to sign with the Scarlet Knights over the likes of Iowa State, Virginia, Wake Forest and many more.
“I’ve decided to commit and sign with Rutgers,” Baldwin told TKR. “I chose Rutgers mostly because of the location, the uniqueness of the school and how different they are. You can really see the potential in Rutgers and I truly believe in what Coach Ash and crew are building over there. So in the end Rutgers came at me with more love than any other school. They wanted me more than anything.”
The class of 2019 Michigan product actually made his decision on Tuesday, but decided not to go public with it until the day of the Early Signing Period.
"Honestly, I was in my third hour (Tuesday)," said Baldwin. "I had just finished my work, was listening to music and it just came to me that (Rutgers) is where I need to go. My family was pro-Rutgers anyway, so they were happy."
Baldwin took an official visit to Rutgers a few weeks back and really enjoyed everything about the trip out to New Jersey.
"Overall, the visit was amazing," he said. “I really enjoyed hanging with some of the players, getting to see the great parts of NJ like New Brunswick and so on. I also really like the campus and the layout.”
Baldwin was joined on the visit by his mom and grandma who both came away impressed with the visit.
“One of the main reasons I didn’t do it sooner was because my dad couldn’t come and visit the school with me,” said Baldwin. “However, I went with my mom and my grandma and they both loved it. It also helps that my brother (Daylen Baldwin) is over here (East Coast) playing college football at Morgan State, which is only a couple hours away.”
