State track champion Malachi Melton remains early priority for Rutgers

There is no shortage of downtime for Cedar Creek (Egg Harbro, N.J.) sophomore Malachi “Max” Melton, who is continuing to excel through the winter sports season. Coming off a solid sophomore season on the gridiron, Melton just won a 55m Group 2 state title and will compete in the winter Meet of Champions this weekend.

He registered a time of 6.58 and that kind of speed is part of the reason he earned an early offer from Rutgers.

The wide receiver prospect talked about how things are going with the Scarlet Knights.

“Things are great, Coach [Chris] Ash came a couple weeks ago to check up and I’ve heard they have got a new OC too so I can’t wait to meet up with him and talk.”

Melton won’t be in attendance at this weekend’s junior day at Rutgers because it falls on the same day as the New Jersey Meet of Champions.

However, he has been to Rutgers on many occasions . His brother, Bo, is currently still a freshman wide receiver for the Scarlet Knights. The possibility of attending the same school as his brother has also resonated with the younger Melton.

“I think it’s an amazing opportunity, definitely one that is hard to turn down,” Melton said. “There would have to be a really good ‘wow factor’ in another school for me to go there; every school has one though.”

Rutgers is Melton’s lone offer in the early going, although more schools are increasing their interest level each week.

Coaches from Maryland, Syracuse, Minnesota and Penn State all made recent stops at Cedar Creek High School recently.

“They said that they can’t really recruit me how they want right now because I’m a sophomore and it’s against rules to do certain things, but also said they are going to be on me in the future,” Melton said.

Once track season winds down, Melton said he has tentative plans to check out Syracuse and Penn State. He also noted that he will be a more frequent visitor at Rutgers.

“After this Sunday, track season is over. So I should be up to Rutgers more than usual to see my brother and most likely look around and talk to coaches too.”
