On Saturday, Rutgers will officially dedicate the basketball court inside The Barn to former Scarlet Knight basketball player and legendary college basketball coach Jim Valvano.
“I am a big Jimmy Valvano fan and he is the best,” head coach Steve Pikiell said on Tuesday. “We are going to have a lot of former players back too. But he was a great ambassador to Rutgers basketball. I think that it is neat they are naming the court after him over in The Barn. The more stories I hear about The Barn, that place was rocking. We are trying to make the RAC the same thing they had at The Barn.”
Valvano was part of the 1967 Rutgers team that made it to the semifinals of the NIT. He also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as a Scarlet Knight.
The last time the Rutgers men’s basketball team played a game inside The Barn was in the 1970’s, although Pikiell said he would be all for playing a future game in the confines of that gym.
“I certainly would. I have not thought much about that but I think that would be neat,” Pikiell said. “We’ could run that by Pat Hobbs. I think last year we were going to have our version of MidKnight Madness there, but then it grew a little bit, adding a concert. But there was talk about that last year.”
The Saturday ceremony for the court dedication will being at 3:30 p.m., with doors opening a half hour earlier at 3 p.m.
