Robert Longerbeam credits offseason improvements for his breakout season
The Rutgers Football defense has been a huge reason for their success this year and one player leading the way is cornerback Robert Longerbeam.
The Junior defensive back has started every game for the Scarlet Knights this season and is not only leading the Scarlet Knights in some major defensive categories, he is 2nd in the Big Ten in pass breakups with 8 and forced fumbles with 2.
Longerbeam credits his dominance on the field to attacking the offseason.
“I focused on learning the defense in and out, being a better leader and not wanting to let my brothers down.” says Longerbeam
Longerbeam has totalled 23 tackles so far this year and has recorded an interception along with a sack. He also credited his physical appearance for his improvements from last season to this season.
“I tried to be more physical on the field, got stronger, faster in the offseason. My physical appearance on the field helps me out.”
Longerbeam who was only a two star recruit coming out of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria Virginia has come a long way since his freshman year. He looks back and gives his Freshman self some advice.
“Get better and focus on your craft,” the 5-foot-10 175-pounder said. “The details are what matters in this sport. Everyones a good athlete but if you’re not focused on the details, that's what gets you beat here.”
Rutgers football is off to their best start since 2012 and have 6 wins for the first time in the Schiano 2.0 era. Although on a bye week Longerbeam says they can't lose focus, especially with number 2 ranked Ohio State next on the schedule.
“Attack the same way, just with more time to prepare,” Longerbeam said. “Focus everything on Ohio State, learning who they are, learning their receivers, watching a lot of film with more time to do it."
