Rutgers offered a quarterback in the class of 2017 today as dual-threat Tayvon Bowers of Bishop McDevitt (Harrisburg, Pa.) learned about his Rutgers offer during a Saturday afternoon visit to Piscataway. He spent a good portion of the day with offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer.
“I hung out with coach Mehringer a lot. We were talking after our meetings with the position coaches,” Bowers said. “He was pretty much saying that their new system would fit me well with the type of quarterback I am. He said they would love to get me up there. It meant a lot.”
The new Rutgers power spread offense also seems to have made an impression on Bowers.
“That is exactly what I am looking for. It is more of an up-tempo offense that spreads out the ball. I like that offense,” Bowers said. “We run a spread at my high school but it is not so much up-tempo. It is a spread and, week-to-week, we base it off what everyone is doing.”
Bowers also provided more examples of what else made an impression upon him today.
“A lot. They are pretty much changing everything. Everything is going to be new; a new weight room, training room, the whole new staff and system. A lot of the stuff Coach Ash was saying was pretty much ‘whatever assumptions we had of Rutgers from the past, just forget about it.’ It is a whole new thing and they are changing it around for the better. I like it a lot.”
As a quarterback, Bowers said he would embrace leading a recruiting effort if he were to select Rutgers as his college.
“This whole program and everything I saw today, I would definitely promote that. It is just all good vibes from Rutgers. I will definitely be back there for a spring practice. I will be with coach Mehringer, listening to the plays and getting a feel for how they do things.”
When it comes down to choosing a school, Bowers explained his criteria.
“I look at the type of offense and will it fit my style of play. I also look at how far is it from home because my family plays a big role. Also, what are the other guys on the team looking like.”
Old Dominion, Boston College and Akron has all been expressing interest while Buffalo was Bowers’ first offer.
“It is really starting to pick up now. After signing day, I started to hear from a lot of coaches. I am just going to see what all happens, but I plan on making my decision before my senior season.”
