Last Friday night, a pair of New Jersey high school football heavyweights took to the field in what turned out to be one of the best games this season. Bergen Catholic, whose only loss was in overtime to St. Joe’s (Montvale), took on a tough St. Peter’s Prep team, who also only counted one defeat.
While St. Peter’s Prep struck first and kept pouring it on to take a 34-6 lead at halftime, it didn’t deter the fight in Bergen Catholic. Still behind in the second half, Bergen Catholic closed the gap and brought it to a much closer game at 48-42.
In what became a nail-biter at the end, Bergen Catholic failed to convert on the final drive as an interception ended any comeback hopes.
St. Peter’s Prep quarterback Johnathan Lewis ended the game 16-of-25 passing for 194 yards, with one touchdown and an interception. He also led the team in rushing with 138 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries.
“It felt great to get that win over Bergen. I’ve never beaten them as a starter on any level before, so it felt good to finally get that win,” said Lewis. “I definitely have to attribute the team and I being on the same page together to get that big win. We couldn’t afford to start slow like the rest of the games. We knew we had to come out fast and we did just that.”
Lewis committed to the Scarlet Knights back in April and has remained solid ever since. Meanwhile, Rutgers defensive backs coach Bill Busch, one of Lewis’ main recruiters, was on hand to see his latest performance.
“Coach Busch actually contacted me after the game the other day,” Lewis told Scarlet Nation. “He basically just told me that I had a great game and it was great to have a chance to see me play in person.”
Lewis and the Marauders are now 5-1 with a lone loss coming against Paramus Catholic at the end of September.
However, Lewis recently compiled some impressive numbers in the last three games.
In that span of time, he’s thrown three passing touchdowns along with 600 passing yards. Lewis also added seven rushing scores while gaining 306 yards on the ground.
Now, Lewis has some goals he hopes to achieve before the end of his senior year.
“Well, first off, I know the team and I want to finish the year as the No.1 team in the state,” said Lewis. "I’m also aiming to throw for 2,000 yards on the year. I’m only at 980 right now, so I’m going to have to step it up more with the passing game. I never really thought of setting a rushing yards goal because I’m a quarterback, but I’m going to try for 800 yards on the season."
Here is a look at Lewis' highlights from last weekend's win over Bergen Catholic.
