The Rutgers football team will have a different look when it takes the field this season as the university has teamed up with Adidas in terms of its apparel. Adidas director of U.S. Sports Grassroots Shannon Ferbrache talked about how the process began.

“When we looked at the landscape of college geographically, I don’t think that we had much of a great presence in the northeast,” Fabreche told Scarlet Nation. “And then when I look at a school like Rutgers, who has been down for a couple of years, those are the kind of places we like to go because we like to ‘buy Apple stock before everyone knows it is Apple stock.’ We think the growth potential is really good at Rutgers, so let’s get them when they need help.”

Once the deal was done, the process of creating and selecting the exact uniforms began.

“The way it begins is we will ask the coach what he is interested in. He will kind of give us a few ideas and that will give our designers some inspiration,” Fabreche said. “Then, they come back three, four, five times, depending upon what it takes, and we will show Coach [Chris Ash] and the athletic director and his guys and they will ultimately make the decision or tell us what they want tweaked. It is usually a process that takes about a year. We are going to have to do it a little quicker this time, but I think it is ultimately a collection of Rutgers people that makes the final call.”

The makeover will also apply to the basketball team.

“Basketball is its own animal in that recruiting is just as important, but you have to make the look of the team sexy and you have to make it where the kids really want to wear those items," Fabreche said. "I am not saying kids go to schools because of those uniforms, but they could not go to a school because they don’t like the look of the uniforms."

The uniforms have not yet been unveiled, although the early response in regards to the partnership with Adidas has been favorable.

“I have seen a lot of former Rutgers players and Rutgers people come to us and say this is a great thing for the school because everybody is either Nike or Under Armour up here and this gives us a little bit of exclusivity," Fabreche said. "That is an exciting thing and I told Coach Ash the other day when I met with him.”

So what will those new uniforms look like?
