Tommy Wyatt joins Rutgers as transfer QB

Rutgers added another quarterback over the weekend as former Overbrook High School alum Tommy Wyatt announced his decision to transfer to Rutgers from Temple. Wyatt spoke with Scarlet Nation about his decision.

“It's my home-state school, which gives me a lot of pride to come and represent my state. Rutgers is rebuilding and trying to get the ball rolling this year. And for me to be a Jersey native quarterback, I would love lead the team and school to success.”

Wyatt was not on scholarship at Temple and that will be the same at Rutgers as he will look to win playing time as a preferred walk-on.

“I love challenges and I witnessed the struggle of last season, and as a New Jersey quarterback, I could not sit around and watch my home state school struggle. So this is my return home. Home is home and you should always protect your house. I'm here to prove I can protect the house, and keep on building onto the house.”

It was that reason which prompted Wyatt to seek out a new school.

“The reason why I left Temple was basically what I said bout sitting around and watching Rutgers struggle,” Wyatt said.

The RU staff has also been maintaining contact with Wyatt, who will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2017 season per NCAA transfer rules.

“I've been in contact with coaches [Rick] Mantz, [Jerry] Kill, and [Chris] Ash. I've met and talked to just about everyone on the staff,” Wyatt said. “I went to practice two Saturdays ago. I went in the team meeting and quarterback meeting and then I watched practice and it was pretty cool. I can't wait to be out there.”

The Rutgers coaches also had a message for Wyatt.

“The staff says they love my skillset and the fact that I have a year of experience in a college program. Coach Kill said that I fit his offense like a glove. I was told I would have a great opportunity to come in and compete right away. I am coming in as a preferred walk-on and I will be paying for my own summer classes, but if I come in and win the job in camp, I will be put on scholarship.”
