The Rutgers starting quarterback position is once again up for grabs heading into the final game of the season against Michigan State. On Monday, head coach Chris Ash provided an update on whether he is leaning toward starting junior Gio Rescigno for the seventh straight game or if true freshman Johnathan Lewis will earn his first start.

“The last couple weeks, we have had conversations about the quarterback position a lot. We'll go through the week and evaluate it, and we'll play the person that gives us the best chance to win this next Saturday. And if that's Johnathan, great. If it's Gio, someone else, whatever, but we'll manage that through the week, evaluate that through the week, and make a decision later on who gives us the best chance to go out and play our best game.

Ash also said he does not expect it to be a game time decision.

“We'll make a decision before that. I mean, that's what's right for the team. But we are not going to make a decision today, on Monday,” Ash said. “We have got to go through some practices and we've got to look at what we need to do against Michigan State, which is a very good defense and see who gives us the best chance to win.”

Offensive coordinator Jerry Kill switched quarterbacks earlier in the season when he swapped out Kyle Bolin after the first five games for Rescigno.

However, the passing game has been lacking under Rescigno’s direction as he is averaging just 82.3 passing yards per game in six starts.

“It is kind of like the last time we opened things up and went to work,” Kill said of the quarterback competition. “We played the guy that we thought gave us the best chance to win. As we go through Michigan State [preparation] and what we’re going to be able to do against them and what gives us a chance to win, that is who we are going to start.”
