Rutgers Football added a new position coach today after a promotion.
Charlie Noonan, previously the assistant linebackers coach, was promoted to coach the defensive tackles, the program announced. Noonan played for head coach Greg Schiano and the Scarlet Knights on the defensive line from 2007-10, becoming a team captain as a senior. He is entering his eighth total year on the coaching staff, the sixth under Schiano.
"Charlie is an excellent football coach and has been a valued member of our staff for the past five years,” Schiano said in a press release. “He knows our culture and what it takes to be successful at Rutgers.”

The Philadelphia native spent the 2024 season as an assistant linebackers coach, working with All-Big Ten Third Teamer Dariel Djabome, who finished with 105 tackles on the year. He also worked with Tyreem Powell, who earned an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention and will participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in March.
Noonan has moved up the coaching ranks on the defensive side of the ball after his playing career, first becoming a volunteer defensive assistant at The Haverford School in Pennsylvania, before becoming a defensive assistant at Division III Thiel College (Pa.) for one season.
He then returned to Rutgers as a graduate assistant under former head coach Kyle Flood, a role he spent two years in during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the latter being the Scarlet Knights' first year in the Big Ten. In his time as a graduate assistant he helped mentor Freshman All-American Kemoko Turay.
Noonan continued his work with defensive lineman, moving to Holy Cross to become the Crusaders' defensive line coach from 2015-18. In his four seasons, Noonan coached multiple Patriot League standouts, including two-time All-Patriot League First Teamer Dewayne Cameron.
In 2019, Noonan became the linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator at Lehigh for one season. The Mountain Hawks had one of the best run defenses at the FCS level, leading the Patriot League and featuring a First-Team All-Patriot League and Second Team All-American in linebacker Keith Woetzel.
When Schiano returned to Rutgers in 2020, Noonan was hired as a defensive assistant for three seasons, then was promoted to a quality control coach in 2023 before assisting former defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak with coaching the linebackers in 2024.
He joins defensive line coach Colin Ferrell and defensive ends coach Julian Campenni in the trenches.
