"Brian is a great fit for our football family," said Schiano. "He has a bright offensive mind and has demonstrated an excellent ability to recruit and develop players, something that is a staple of our program."
During his tenure at Pittsburgh, Angelichio helped develop the tight end position into one of the Panthers' top offensive weapons. In addition to coaching the team's tight ends, Angelichio served as Pitt's offensive coordinator in the BBVA Compass Bowl.
"From competing against Rutgers and Coach Schiano for the previous five years, I have a tremendous amount of respect for the tradition he has built at Rutgers," said Angelichio. "I am excited to contribute to the program and help win a BIG EAST championship."
In 2009, Pitt's starting tight ends, and 2010 NFL Draft picks, Nate Byham (San Francisco 49ers) and Dorin Dickerson (Houston Texans), were both named All-BIG EAST and were major assets for the Panthers' potent offense under offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti.
Dickerson, who set a Pitt tight end record with 10 touchdown receptions, was named to the 2009 Football Writers Association All-America Team. Dickerson additionally was a finalist for the prestigious John Mackey Award.
Byham was a two-time All-BIG EAST selection under Angelichio's tutelage.
Prior to his stay at Pittsburgh, Angelichio spent 10 years coaching at Ithaca College (1996-2005). Named Ithaca's offensive coordinator in 2000, Angelichio guided a highly productive unit that set or tied 30 team and individual records over his final five seasons. The Bombers averaged nearly 40 points per game in 2005 to rank 18th nationally on the NCAA Division III level.
Angelichio coached seven All-Americans at Ithaca, which advanced to the postseason in seven of his 10 years.
A 1995 graduate of St. Lawrence with a bachelor's in physical education, Angelichio was a member of the Saints' football and baseball teams. He was a three-year starter at outside linebacker and also was a captain and four-year starter on the baseball team. He earned his master's from Ithaca in 1997.
