Departing: Thirteen guys will play college ball, the most notable being RB Knowshon Moreno going to Georgia and LB Nick Macaluso to Stanford. LB Keith Heaney and DE Andrew Poulson will be at Lafayette, WR/DB Mark Longo will attend Cornell, DT Howard Barbieri is walking on at Rutgers, RB/LB Trent MacCray is going to Kean, Eric Daneman to Wagner, DE Bobby Haspel to The College of New Jersey, QB Matt Walsh to Monmouth, center Dan Merker to Moravian, and linemen Jeff & Jon Mercer to Springfield.
Offensive Highlights: The Eagles run the flexbone, a veer option, and four starters are back. The new quarterback will be either junior Pat Campbell (6-foot-2, 190) or senior Sean Gilbert (5-foot-9, 175). Senior Dave Dosil (5-foot-9, 190) is a returning starter in the backfield and he's moving into Moreno's fullback spot. The halfbacks will be seniors Brian Meeker (5-foot-8, 185) and Sean Barber (5-foot-7, 175). Senior Dayon Lane (6-foot-1, 175) returns at one receiver spot, with the other spot going to senior Mike Calabrese (5-foot-11, 175). The line returns two starters in senior guards Brian King (6-foot-1, 230) and Greg Sullivan (6-foot-2, 230). Seniors Joe Sciortino (6-foot-2, 210) and Mike Flaim (6-foot, 210) will man the tackles, while center is between senior Mike Guarnieri (5-foot-9, 205) and sophomore Brett Maher (5-foot-11, 200).
Defensive Highlights: Three starters return to the 4-4 defense. On the line, senior Alec Bay (6-foot-2, 230) returns to his tackle spot. The other tackle will be a three way battle among King, Maher, and Guarnieri. The ends will be Sciortino and sophomore Mike Farrell (5-foot-11, 200). At linebacker, Dosil started at OLB last year and will probably move inside. Juniors Chris Guderian (5-foot-10, 200) and Dan Miller (5-foot-11, 190) will battle for the other inside spot. The two outside spots will come from Barber, junior Josh Matthews (5-foot-10, 185), and sophomore Matt Martino (5-foot-9, 170). There's also the possibility Dosil may stay outside. Lane returns at one cornerback, while junior Josh McManigal (5-foot-10, 170) and sophomore Chris Bunge (5-foot-9, 175) battle for the other corner. Meeker will step in at safety.
Special Teams: Dosil is the punter, while kicker is undecided.
Schedule: Middletown South opens at home with Neptune. After that, it's at Pinelands, Central, at Wall, Lakewood, Toms River North, at Freehold Boro, Ocean, and at Middletown North on Thanksgiving Day.
Question Marks: They'll be young in some spots, but they'll be very athletic and can run. "They're not to be underestimated," said Head coach Steve Antonucci. "With a couple of games under their belts, they'll gain confidence."
On The Recruiting Front: The Eagles have several 1-AA prospects. Dosil and Bay should have big years. Lane is ranked #136 on NJ Varsity and a probable 1-AA. Sullivan is an Ivy type. King is also a 1-AA possibility. Junior Pat Campbell may also have 1-AA potential.
Coach's Comments: "We're going to be very good and competitive. There will be a little bit of an unknown factor, but we have six or seven kids who have experience from last year." – Head Coach Steve Antonucci
