In an effort to bolster the shooting capabilities of the Rutgers men’s basketball team, head coach Steve Pikiell did not take the conventional route towards recruiting. That culminated today in the announcement of shooting guard Peter Kiss announcing his decision to transfer from Quinnipiac to Rutgers after playing just one season.
Kiss averaged 13.3 points per game as a true freshman and explained why he is on the move.
“The main reason I left Quinnipiac and decided to transfer was the coaching change they had. I had a real good relationship with Coach [Tom] Moore,” Kiss told Scarlet Nation today. “I chose Rutgers because of my relationship with Coach Pikiell and the confidence I have in building the program. I think he can definitely make it one of the best in country. Also, the school has some beautiful campuses and great academics that factored in as well.”
The commitment comes on the heels of a weekend visit to Piscataway.
“My official visit went really well and I visited a bit of the spring football game until the rain came down,” Kiss said. “We also went to dinner and I got a chance to hang out with Mike Williams and the guys. I just got a real good feel for the campus. My favorite part was seeing how diverse the campus is. You can be downtown on College Ave or go to the RAC and it’s a whole different vibe.
“Mike Williams was my player host. He’s a great dude and a great player. I definitely want to learn a lot from him in my year sitting out.”
Kiss also spent some time with the coaching staff while on his visit.
“I hung out with coaches Pikiell and [Jay] Young the most on the trip,” Kiss said. “They basically just said I have an opportunity to step in right away, play quality minutes, and could help build this program.”
Kiss will have to sit out this coming season as per NCAA transfer rules, although it won’;t be long until he is on the Rutgers campus.
“I will be enrolling in the first summer session, around May 30th I believe.”
