Rutgers has a new offensive coordinator in place in John McNulty who has returned to his former position, which he held from 2006 through 2008. While McNulty was at Rutgers, he coached quarterback Mike Teel to three very successful seasons. Teel threw for over 3,000 yards in 2007 and ’08 to become the all-time leading passer in school history.

Teel spoke with Scarlet Nation about what Rutgers is getting in McNulty.

“Rutgers is getting a quality guy that cares about the players. He knows the game and he is going to work hard and do all the things that it takes to be successful. Every player I have been around that has played with all said the same thing; they love the guy. He is hard on you on the field but when you get off the field, he is a guy that you can sit down and eat lunch with. He is just a really good person.”

Since McNulty left, Rutgers saw eight different coordinators in nine seasons. This hire may bring a stop to that revolving door of coaches.

“He brings stability. There has not been that stability there really since he left,” Teel said of McNulty. “If you look at it, when he left after my senior year in the winter of ’09, there has not been any sort of stability. It is hard for any level player to learn a system and then go out and execute it, let alone go out and do that every year of your career in college. I think he is able to bring some stability. He has been coaching for a long time, his family is from the east coast and I think he probably wanted a job on the east coast. I think that helps a lot for him as a coach.

“You are bringing in a guy that has coached in the NFL and has coached in the college ranks. He has done it before. That’s a huge bonus.”

McNulty ran a pro-style system during his previous stint at Rutgers, although he used a lot of receivers in what was a prolific passing offense.

Teel talked about what kind of offense McNulty might run this time around.

“There are so many different coordinators and teams that use so many different schemes. I think a lot of that has to do with your personnel. You have to have good players to win. When you have a quarterback in the program, you have to think what he is. Is he a dual-threat, is he a pocket-type? Then, you build it off of that. If you build the pieces around him, then you have a chance. I think knowing John, he is an extremely smart football guy.

"So, he will be able to fit the system to what he wants, to what the team is going to be successful with, whether it is a no-huddle spread or pro-style. He can make it work because he is a smart enough football guy.”

Head coach Chris Ash was looking for an offensive coordinator to also coach the quarterbacks and one who will be at Rutgers for more than one year.

“I could see him sticking around," Teel said. "In the coaching world, he is a younger guy. He is not at the end of his career, he is probably right in the middle of his career. I don’t see him going anywhere. But who knows, opportunities do come up and things change. I could see him being a guy that is going to be here for a while and I think he is in a similar situation that he was in the first time around. He was here for a while and I think we may have been a little bit further along when we were kind of rebuilding with Coach [Greg] Schiano. But it is pretty similar to where they are. They are really close and a couple of key pieces will help it. And I think he is one of those guys that is going help.”
