Latest Rutgers commit Eugene Omoruyi explains decision

Rutgers landed another commitment this week, one who could come in and provide some immediate help. The latest prospect to join the Scarlet Knights is class of 2016 Canadian wing Eugene Omoruyi.

"I felt Rutgers was the best fit, mostly cause of the coaching staff and their resume from building a team and bringing them to the top. Also, when visiting, I got to hang out with the guys and the atmosphere felt like a family-based team which really means a lot to me. Also, Rutgers is known for great academics, which is was another big factor for me choosing to come to Rutgers."

Omoruyi picked Rutgers over other finalist Loyola-Chicago and will be on campus in just a few short weeks.

“I'm supposed to be there for Aug 28, but I'm so hyped I might go a week early and start training to get better for the season,” he said.

A recent visit to campus also influenced Omoruyi's final decision.

“I got to tour around the school, meet some of the staff members in various departments, hang with the guys on the team for a bit, and also got to watch a team workout,” Omoruyi said. “The whole team was really welcoming and inviting when I was on my visit. Everyone on the staff stood out to me."

Assistant coach Brendin Knight was credited with playing an integral role in Omoruyi’s recruitment.

“I talked to coach Knight the most. He told me he watched game film on me prior to my visit and it shocked me because he knew exactly how I would fit into the rotation and the areas I have to work on to become a better player. I only started playing basketball around four or five years ago.”
