Just when it seemed like recruiting was done for the class of 2016, the Scarlet Knights managed to snag another late commitment. This time, head coach Chris Ash and his staff have landed a Junior College defensive back Kobe Marfo, a 6-foot, 185-pound cornerback who spent last season at Reedley Community College in Reedley, Calif.
Marfo took some time out of his busy schedule to talk about his decision, which comes on the heels of a Monday unofficial visit to Rutgers.
“I loved getting to spend time with Coach Ash.” Marfo said, “We were in his office and he just broke down everything to me and what he's all about. Also explained how I fit in with what he is trying to do at Rutgers. Then I met with cornerbacks coach [Aaron] Henry and I was able to learn some stuff from him as well in regards to football and life in general. After talking with him, I just knew that I wanted to take my talents to Rutgers.”
Marfo went into a little more detail about what caught his eye during his visit.
“The instant hospitality I got when I first stepped on campus, and the plan they have for me academically and athletically really stood out to me.”
Marfo becomes is the 18th commitment for Rutgers in the 2016 class after spending last semester out in California.
As a freshman at Reedley, Marfo finished the season with 40 tackles, 15 pass breakups, four interceptions and three blocked field goals. He currently has three years of eligibility remaining and will be enrolling at Rutgers on May 31st.
There is an immediate need in the Rutgers secondary and Marfo will have the chance to step in right away and contribute.
“I plan on being first team all season,” Marfo said.
