Jarrett Paul discusses Rutgers commitment

Rutgers scored a victory today as the coaching staff landed commit No.2 in the 2018 class. Paramus Catholic defensive back Jarrett Paul joined the Scarlet Knights when he offered up his verbal pledge this evening.

Paul told Scarlet Nation why he chose to become a Scarlet Knight.

“I choose Rutgers first because of how close to home it is. It’s nice that my friends and family get a chance to see me play. I like how Coach Ash is a former DB coach. I really trust him a lot with my development and I was looking at the amount of guys from the surrounding area they have as well. I want to be at a school where I’m comfortable with a group of guys. Also, I saw their DB depth for the future and I can come in and make a contribution pretty early. Plus, it’s the Big Ten. I can compete against the best like Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State.”

Paul’s commitment capped off a day on campus in which he watched the RU spring game.

“I was there today for a visit and it went very well. They welcomed me like they do on all my visits,” Paul said. “I've been there and everyone knew me right away. I also sat down with all the coaches and I also talked with a few of the signees especially the ones from New York City like me. I was talking a lot with [Olakunle] Fatukasi, [Shameen] Jones, and [Tim] Barrow. They were just telling me it’s my decision at the end of the day and they just said that Rutgers is going to be up near the top soon.”

While Paul went public with his decision tonight, he informed the coaching staff of his choice earlier this week.

“I actually committed a few days ago, and I told Coach Ash first before anyone. He was excited to make me a part of the family. He also said they have the things at Rutgers to take my game to the next level and that he has some really big plans for me.”

Paul, who played last season at Christ The King in New York, hopes to return to campus soon and will begin doing some recruiting of his own.

“I’m not sure yet when I’m going to visit again, but I’ll camp soon and hopefully start recruiting kids to join me at Rutgers too,” Paul said. “I plan on recruiting a lot of New York guys like myself especially guys like Paul Woods, Amad Anderson, and Zihir Lacewell.”

Paul also expects to be enrolled in Rutgers next January.

“Right now the plan is to enroll early. I just have talk it over with my guidance counselors.”
