Jafar Williams talks about Rutgers' wide receiver position

Rutgers first-year wide receivers coach Jafar Williams has been handed a mix of veterans and younger players at the position and took some time to speak with the media yesterday about some of those players.

One player whose stock has been on the rise is junior John Tsimis.

“We moved him outside this week, so he’s practiced at outside receiver,” Williams said of Tsimis. “With a guy like that, who does not have top end speed, he makes up for it with his ability to move on the line of scrimmage and the savvy he has in route running. He is a very savvy guy. He can put himself in a position to make plays. There is going to be a spot for him this year.”

Williams also had an interesting take on the quarterback competition that was recently won by Chris Laviano.

“Our guys don’t need to worry about who is throwing them the ball. I always tell our receivers ‘I don’t care where the ball is at, you make a play.’ So really it doesn’t matter who is throwing us the football. But I do think the chemistry thing will start to happen more as we get closer to the game.”

Heading into the first game of the season against Washington, Williams is also hopeful to have the services of redshirt freshman Jawuan Harris.

“He has been injured for the previous week, but I think we plan on having him back [Wednesday],” Williams said. “He still has a lot to learn, very raw but does have a lot of talent. He is going to help us in multiple aspects this year.”
