INSTANT RECAP: Rutgers Basketball versus Columbia Lions

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Rutgers Scarlet Knights men’s basketball team earned its first victory of December this afternoon inside The RAC as the Scarlet Knights downed the Columbia Lions by a final score of 68-65 in overtime.

Here is a closer look inside Rutgers’ latest win.

THE GOOD - Shaq Carter continues to improve….

Although the team struggled mightily early on, they did have one bright spot that was the play of former junior college player Shaq Carter. Over the past four or so games, we’ve seen him continue to develop and he is emerging as a solid player both offensive and defensively. Not only did Carter have two blocks down low, he also finished with 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and grabbed six rebounds too. While it wasn’t the best day for most of the team, Carter showed today that he deserves more playing time in the future.

THE BAD - Three Point shooting woes continue…

The Scarlet Knights finished the first half without making one three pointer going 0-of-8 from beyond the arc. The team couldn’t get much going offensive in the first half at all. In the end, Rutgers did end up making a couple three pointers, however the team still shot 2-of-19 from three point land. These three point shooting woes can really hurt a team and coach Pikiell brought it up earlier this week. With a whole week off before the next game, it will be interesting to see how Pike and crew try to fix this problem.

GAME BALL - EUGENE OMORUYI

Originally I had Shaq Carter in this spot, but Omoruyi played some very good basketball down the stretch. After scoring just four points on five shots in the first half, Omoruyi bounced back in the second half finish with a team high 18 points. He also added six rebounds, two assists and two steals on the day. Despite fouling out with a minute left in overtime in a controversial call, Omoruyi still earned this honor today.

UP NEXT: Next Saturday, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will welcome the Maine Black Bears to the RAC for a 3pm EST matchup to wrap up out of conference play.
