Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano announced today that Gavin Wimsatt will be the starting quarterback to start the 2023 season for the Scarlet Knights.
Wimsatt is 6-foot-3, 225-pound redshirt-sophomore quarterback who has appeared in 12 total games over the last two seasons along with six starts.
In those 12 games, Wimsatt went 74-of-166 for a total of 902 yards, five touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also has rushed the ball 49 times for 131 yards.

Coming out of high school, Wimsatt was ranked among the top quarterback prospects in the 2022 class as he was invited out the to the Elite 11 Finals, but just missed the cut of the top 11. Later on that summer, Wimsatt made the decision to skip his senior year of high school and enrolled at Rutgers right before the start of the 2021 season.
Behind Wimsatt on the depth chart is junior QB Evan Simon who will serve as his main backup and then behind him is true freshman Ajani Sheppard who enrolled earlier this year.
How will Wimsatt perform this season? Only time will tell, but with an experienced OC now running the show in Kirk Ciarrocca that should help with his development.
