Daevon Robinson chooses Rutgers, breaks down commitment

Rutgers made it a dual-commitment day as Shawneee High (Medford, N.J.) athlete Daevon Robinson committed to Rutgers not long after Long Branch defensive end Kaymar Mimes made his pledge.

“I’m committing to Rutgers. I choose them because of the coaches and the program what's to come,” Robinson told Scarlet Nation. “I want to be a part of great academics and be one of the players.”

Robinson first broke the news to his future head coach.

“I called Coach [Chris] Ash to tell him first. Coach was just very excited and he said that I made his night and that he's really excited about me.”

A couple of other coaches also had an impact and were even on hand for Robinson's state championship victory a couple of weeks ago.

“My two main recruiters are Jafar [Williams] and [Vince] Okruch,” Robinson said. “Coach Jafar and I talk almost every day and we have a good relationship. As for Coach Okruch, he just keeps it real, so I respect him a lot for that.”

Robinson has the potential to play offense or defense and mentioned where Rutgers sees him fitting in.

“They want me as a tight end on offense,” he said.

The commitment comes on the heels of Robinson's official visit to Rutgers, which seems to have made an impression over the weekend.

“On my visit, I liked the way the way the players talked about the coaches,” Robinson said. “Also, I liked how the coaches treated me and showed me attention throughout my whole visit. I really appreciated the love they showed me and the vision they have.”

While on campus, Robinson was hosted by a couple of other South Jersey products.

“My player hosts were Everett [Wormley] and Bo [Melton]. We’ve all known each other for a while now and we have a great bond," Robinson said. "Ev is kind of like a big brother to me. I’ve know Bo since I was little and I've been playing football with Ev since back in the seventh grade.”

Robinson will have to wait a bit before getting on the RU campus, although he will make his future official this week.

“My district doesn't really allow the early enrolling, so I won't be doing that. I will be signing on Wednesday.”
