Callinan taking time, Rutgers still in top two

Several key in-state recruiting targets remain on the Rutgers board, one of them being St. Peter's Prep's Charles Callinan. Last month, Callinan told Scarlet Nation the Scarlet Knights and Boston College were standing out among his offer list, and that remains true as of today.
"Both staffs have expressed how much they want me as a recruit," Callinan said. "It's pretty much the same thing with BC and RU. They're both pretty enthused about me and that's pretty much the reasons I have so much interest in them. They want me really bad and they will do good things with me in their schemes."

Callinan returned yesterday from a weekend unofficial to Chestnut Hill, where he was able to get his most in-depth look yet at the Eagles program.
"I went up with my mom and dad on Saturday and watched the scrimmage and got to hang out with Mike Giacone," Callinan said. "On Sunday, I watched the team lift and sat in on meetings. It was cool because I got to see everything I hadn't seen before. I had only been there once before after the season, and I pretty much just showed up, got a tour, watched some practice and went home. This time I got a closer look.
"I like it a lot. I feel like I got to know some of the kids, even in the one day I was there. Everyone was nice and accepting. The way they do things is similar to the way we do things at Prep. It is a great team environment, the lifts are intense and everyone is together."
The 6-foot-4 Callinan said Boston College is recruiting him as an athlete, with the option of picking what position he would like to start at. If need be, the staff would move him to another spot.
The Eagles already have three wide receiver commits for 2013, but Callinan said that wouldn't effect them negatively.
Rutgers, meanwhile is the program Callinan has spent the most time around. He's played two games on the turf at High Point Solutions Stadium and has been on campus four times since Kyle Flood took over the reins as head coach.
"Rutgers is a great program," Callinan said. "I've been around them a lot and I have good relationships with the coaches and the players. When I look at them, I see a great football team on the rise. I see really big things in their future. It's just a comfortable environment."
Throughout his recruitment, Callinan said the message from Flood, his recruiter Dave Cohen and offensive coordinator Dave Brock has been uniform--that he is a priority in the class and is the type of player they like bringing in.
"They like the way I play and how competitive I am," Callinan said. "They also talk about the school I come from, how they recruit a lot of kids from St. Peter's Prep. We're taught great tendencies by Coach Hansen, we all strive to be the best and we all work hard.
"Rutgers says I come from a great family and a great program. They told me I'm a winner and I know how to handle pressure because I've played in so many big games in high school. That's good to hear."
Besides Rutgers and BC, Virginia and Wake Forest were two programs on Callinan's radar this summer. But the Cavaliers have already filled up their wide receiver quota and "are not in the picture," while he has not had time to visit Wake Forest.
"If I don't have time to visit Wake before the season, I might be able to do it during the season if I don't commit to any other school first," Callinan said.
As he heads into his senior year, Callinan said he is not waiting on any specific school. His head coach, Rich Hansen, said if he does not commit before the season he could send out film from the Marauders' first three games and see if new interest or offers come.
"I don't know if I want to do that yet," he said. "I haven't made that decision. To be honest, I'm getting a little stressed by recruiting now, so I'm just going to think about what I want to do."
