Rutgers has added a quarterback to its 2018 recruiting class as Los Angeles junior Jalen Chatman of Narbone High School announced his plans to become a Scarlet Knight today. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Chatman held a mix of offers from FCS and FBS programs, which included ones from Navy, Tulane and Army.
Narbonne High offensive coordinator Brandon Manumaleuna offered his take on Chatman.
"He's a fierce competitor. He has a lot of qualities that successful quarterbacks have; smart in the classroom, football IQ is off the charts and he is very calm in pressure situations. He has the potential to be a very good college player. A comparison who I think is similar in play and demeanor is Russell Wilson. He is a fierce competitor and proven winner. He doesn't meet the typical measurements, but makes up for it with playmaking ability and heart."
Narbone High recruiting coordinator Mike Clayton also talked a bit about Chatman.
“Jalen is an excellent athlete who's remarkably accurate. I think most dual-threat quarterbacks that are under 6-foot-3 are compared to Russell Wilson. Jalen has some of those same traits in his stature, accuracy, IQ and mobility. I met with Coach [Jerry] Kill while he was here. Great guy. Seems very happy to be out recruiting and fully supportive of Coach [Chris] Ash's vision for the program."
