The Monday Morning Kickoff

Yesterday marked the end of the most recent dead period as prospects can now visit college campuses and interact with college coaches on those visits. However, it may still be a quiet week as this is the part of the year when many coaches take their vacations before the start of training camp.

Meanwhile, recruiting remains very busy in Piscataway as Rutgers currently has the No.13-ranked 2017 recruiting class in the nation, according to Rivals.com.

Rutgers continues to do well with a variety of uncommitted prospects and among them is Ohio defensive end Brendan Bordner.

"I talk to Coach [Vince] Okruch and Coach Burnham most of the time, but also Coach Ash and [Rick] Mantz as well. I'm trying to make sure I come back out to Rutgers soon, I think I'm going on the 30th [of July],” Bordner said.

The RU staff is also making some headway with defensive back Exree Loe of Johnstown (Pa.), who is closing in on a top five.

"I'm looking to narrow my choices down to a top five soon,” Loe told Scarlet Nation. “I'm still in pretty good contact with Rutgers. I haven't talked to them in a while because they are on vacation so I just let them enjoy time with their family instead of bothering them."

Recruiting has also received some help from within the state as Cedar Creek offensive lineman and RU commit Owen Bowles has been trying to bring some new in-state prospects into the class of 2017.

“I've just been telling those guys why they should join us and I keep pointing out that there isn't any reason not to go along with everyone else in New Jersey,” Bowles said. “I've just been showing them a lot of RU love.”

A Rutgers target in the northern part of the state recently transferred schools as Evidence Njoku will spend his senior year at Wayne Hills after transferring from Cedar Grove.

“I'm still in contact with Rutgers. I mostly talk to all of the staff,” Njoku said. “Coach [Bill] Busch is my main recruiter and he's been recruiting me hard. He tells me what the new Rutgers is all about.”

Training camp is set to begin in less than a month’s time, which mean it is time to keep an eye out for Scarlet Nation’s Countdown to Camp series, which will continue throughout the week.
