RB Jon Lovett joins Rutgers' 2017 class, breaks down commitment

Cherokee class of 2017 running back Jon Lovett brought an end to his recruitment today when he offered up his verbal commitment to the Rutgers coaching staff. Lovett talked to Scarlet Nation about his decision.

"It’s my state school. I love that I have the opportunity to stay home and show everybody how us Jersey boys do it,” Lovett said. “The program is on the rise with the new staff. It’s just all coming together and hopefully we can compete nationally.”

Lovett brings yet another South Jersey prospect to Rutgers as the staff has been loading up on prospects from that area.

Lovett has also been longtime friends with RU commit Everett Wormley of Burlington Township.

“Everett Wormley and I grew up playing against each other in Pop Warner on different teams. So it will be nice to be on the same team for a change,” Lovett said. “We both talk a lot about Rutgers, but the one thing he always says is that we can start a legacy at Rutgers.”

Lovett went on to credit RU running backs coach Zak Kuhr with influencing his decision to become part of a new era at Rutgers.

“He is the main guy who recruited me. He’s a straight up guy. I truly believe he will help me improve as a person on and off the field.”

Lovett also endorsed his future head coach Chris Ash.

“He is a straight up guy as well. He came from Ohio State, the DC over there, and he just knows how to get it done and how to win.”

Rutgers’ new offense is one more component that appeals to Lovett as he will be one of only three underclassmen running backs when he arrives on the banks in June of 2017.

“I think I can definitely fit into the new spread offense scheme. My main goal is to play my freshman year, but I will do whatever it takes to help the team.”
