Laviano talks Rutgers commitment

Rutgers increased its class of 2013 by one today when it received word that Holy Trinity quarterback Christopher Laviano of Hicksville, N.Y., became the latest prospect to commit to the Scarlet Knights.

Although the decision came this afternoon, Laviano claimed to be leaning towards Rutgers for some time.

"I've pretty much known for quite a while that Rutgers was my top choice," Laviano said. "I've been talking to my dad and my coaches for the past couple of weeks and I decided that I wanted to go to a place where I could make a difference for four years."

Laviano also held a Boston College offer, but that seemed to come to a dead end when the Eagles received a second quarterback commitment to their class of 2013.

He continued to test the waters and made a trip down to Florida last weekend.

"I went down to Florida and really threw great," he said. "It's not that Florida wasn't spectacular. It really was. It's more about Rutgers and more about my feelings and expectations for what this Rutgers football program is going to be."

Rutgers offered Laviano last summer and has been recruiting him heavily ever since.

That has enabled him to build a strong relationship with Rutgers, particularly head coach Kyle Flood.

"Coach Flood is from my league, coach Spence actually started out in my high school," Laviano explained. "They have a pretty good relationship with my coaching staff here. Some of my coaches were actually coached by coach Spence. I have a really good relationship with the Rutgers coaching staff and it just felt like the right decision."

Laviano has made numerous trips to Rutgers and explained what else made him finally bring his recruitment to an end.

"I have been up there a bunch of times and it's pretty close to home. The energy, whenever I went to Rutgers, is second to none. The future is so bright there and I just want to be a part of it. I just really want the opportunity to make a difference in the Rutgers football program."
