Kyle Bolin named Rutgers starting quarterback

Rutgers finally put a public end to its quarterback competition as head coach Chris Ash announced Kyle Bolin as the team’s starter today. Bolin joined the program as a grad transfer from Louisville in May.

"We have decided Kyle Bolin will be the starting quarterback for game one," Ash said. "...I am real happy with the leadership Kyle has brought to our football team. He is a really mature individual, has been well trained and well coached in his past. He just has a wealth of experience. We are really excited about what he is going to bring to our offense."

Last week, Bolin was announced as team captain prior to being officially named the starting quarterback.

"It speaks volumes about him as a person and what he has done since he got here. Right away, he is a likeable guy," Ash said. "People are drawn to him. He demonstrated great leadership ability. He has worked extremely hard since the day he got here. The playersreally respected that and that is why he was voted captain."

Bolin beat out returning starter Gio Rescigno and true freshman Johnathan Lewis, neithger of which has been officially named the backup quarterback to Bolin.

"The backup right now is still undecided," Ash said. Both Gio and Johnathan potentially have an opportunity to play depending on the situation."

Ash also explained what put Bolin ahead of Rescigno and Lewis.

“He just executed and made good decisions. He understands the offense, has real good command of the offense. But it is really just about execution and making good decisions and protecting the football, understanding all aspects of the offense. That is really what separated him.”

Bolin was not made available for any media interviews this summer except for Rutgers media day.
