Dorian Miller brings biggest arms on the team into the trenches

The weight room has been very good to Rutgers junior starting left guard Dorian Miller as he can make the claim that he has the biggest arms on the entire team. Miller talked about earning that distinction this past year.

“I know in the winter it was for sure. In the spring, for some reason, they went back down. But I got them back up to 20.5 [inches]. Sebastian [Joseph] might be right there too. I am not as defined, but I’ll take it. I have never been vain like that and I never really sized myself up like that. But it was a little surprising.”

That is just one more sign of the progress being made by the Rutgers strength staff as training camp has been much different this time around.

“I think the main thing is that I have been able to maintain my weight at 295 [pounds]. In past training camps, I have lost some weight," Miller said. "I would get down to 285 and sometimes a little lower. But this year, the overall way the program operates, there is always someone in your face with water or Gatorade. They are always staying on us with nutrition too.”

Miller’s weight room numbers have also increased as his most recent bench press test at 225 pounds resulted in 24 reps.

“Bench has always been my thing, working on my lower body has always been a little tougher for me,” Miller said.

On the field, Miller has made steady progress as well.

“Dorian has upped his game from I’d say 8 out of 10- snaps, he’s good to go,” said offensive line coach AJ Blazek. “Two of them, technique might beat him. He’s really become very consistent. I am excited about his future. …As you plan for the future, he is a leader.”

Now, heading into his second season as a starter, Miller is looking for a big year in the trenches.

“That is what I am hoping for,” Miller said. “In the grand scheme of things, you have to take things day by day and focus on the little things and find flaws in my game that I can make better.”
