Tops ready to reload- AUDIO

Last season had a magical ending, to say the least for WKU.

The Toppers capped off an impressive run with a Sun Belt Conference tournament championship and berth in the NCAA tournament. But they weren't done.

Ty Rogers' immaculate shot to beat Drake in the first round gave WKU perhaps the most national exposure it had ever received. The Toppers rode the magic all the way to the Sweet 16.

After the magic had ended, the Toppers said goodbye to three of its top four scorers: seniors Rogers, Courtney Lee and Tyrone Brazelton. Lee also ended up as the No. 22 selection in the NBA draft by the Orlando Magic. The trio seemed to leave a wide hole for the coming season. More than one returner would have to step up.

Enter junior guard A.J. Slaughter, the leading returning scorer. Slaughter, who averaged 7.6 points last season, has already embraced the go-to role the Toppers sorely needed.

Other roles have also been redefined for sophomore forwards Steffphon Pettigrew and D.J. Magley and junior forward Jeremy Evans, who have showed promise in their new positions thus far.

They'll also have the luxury of some talented newcomers, including sophomore guard Sergio Kerusch, who already displayed his talents at 'Hilltopper Hysteria.'

Kerusch joined Slaughter and Pettigrew in addressing the media today.

Also enter, new coach Ken McDonald, who takes over for departed coach Darrin Horn. McDonald has already had his share of injuries to deal with in practice. Magley, senior center Japeth Aguilar, senior forward Mike Walker, senior guard Orlando Mendez-Valdez and senior center Nemanja Milosevic.

The result has given McDonald a chance to find out more about his newcomers.

McDonald addressed the injuries as well as what he's seen thus far and looks forward to seeing from his team this season, as well, in his press conference today.
