White joins PSU class

It didn't take Millville, N.J. defensive tackle Antoine White all that long to make his college decision.

Just one week after picking up a verbal offer from Penn State, the three-star prospect decided to make a trip to State College this past weekend. Then, after going home and thinking about it for a little more than 24 hours, White informed the Nittany Lion coaching staff of his decision earlier this morning.

"Basically they just explained to me their entire situation at defensive tackle and that's what really sold me," White said. "They explained how they plan to take two defensive tackles and it's a first come, first serve situation. They were real upfront with me about everything and I really appreciated that."

White collected 15 total verbal offers, including such programs as Boston College, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Michigan State, North Carolina Pitt, Rutgers and Syracuse. His original plan was to visit both Michigan State and North Carolina in the coming weeks, but after a personal conversation with Penn State defensive line coach Larry Johnson, White says that is when he began to realize that Penn State is the best for him.

"Coach Johnson made a real interesting point about the bowl games and sanctions and it really stuck with me. He said that I can't base my college decision situation off of missing out on one game. There are so many other things that go into such an important decision. Academics, being comfortable with the campus and the town, the relationship with the coaches, all of that. That really stuck with me.

"When you really think about, the sanctions will be coming to an end when I'm a sophomore, depending on if I redshirt. So, it's not as big of an impact as some people make it out to be. Then, when you consider everything else Penn State has to offer, especially a coach like Coach J, and all the guys he's been able to get to the NFL, it's the best place for me."

While White has been to Penn State before, this past weekend was the first time that he's toured the facilities without other prospects. One moment that he noted was walking into a silent Beaver Stadium with just his family and Johnson.

"Walking into the stadium by myself was something I'll never forget. I mean, honestly, a stadium doesn't have a huge impact on my decision, but at the same time, every time you go in there and think about all the great teams, all the great games that have been played there, it makes you think about how grateful you are to get an opportunity like this."

White was one of the top defensive lineman to participate in all of the Rivals/Under Armour camps this spring. With his commitment, it is believed that Penn State has two remaining scholarships, one of which should go to another defensive tackle.
