AU flavor throughout post-spring Alabama state rankings

TWITTER- FACEBOOK-

The updated 2014 Alabama state rankings were released on Monday by Rivals.com after an exhaustive evaluation process this spring.

Hoover corner Marlon Humphrey is the lone five-star prospect in the state and the No. 11 player nationally. He remains uncommitted, although Alabama remains the clear favorite due to family ties.

Six prospects are members of the Rivals100, with four ranked in the Rivals250. Nine total four-stars trail Humphrey in the rankings.

Alabama and Auburn each hold three commitments in the top 10, with the Tigers claiming five total commitments in the top 12.

"I like the talent and the quality of depth in the Yellowhammer State following the spring," Rivals.com southeast recruiting analyst Kynon Codrington said. "Guys like Joshua Casher and Stephen Roberts really impressed me this spring. We know what Tre Williams and Shaun Dion Hamilton can do and they didn't disappoint at the Rivals Challenge event in Birmingham."

Auburn's highest state ranked commitment is St. Paul's linebacker Tre Williams. The Rivals Five-Star Challenge selection is ranked No. 3 in-state and is Alabama's top linebacker. Williams is ranked No. 33 nationally.

Williams' St. Paul teammate, center Joshua Casher, ranks No. 7 in the state and became the nation's top center after an impressive spring. Casher joins Williams as a Rivals Five-Star Challenge selection and is the No. 101 overall prospect nationally.

Auburn's third commitment in the state's post-spring top ten is Vigor defensive end Justin Thornton. Thornton ranks No. 8 in the state and comes in at No. 120 nationally.

Just outside the top ten is Opelika tight end Jakell Mitchell, who ranks No. 11 in-state and is Alabama's top tight end. Mitchell's offer list is more impressive than some four-stars and Mitchell is poised to move up into four-star status with a strong senior season.

Immediately following Mitchell is Prattville running back Kamryn Pettway at No. 12. The bruiser switched his pledge from Florida State to Auburn in March has hasn't looked back. Pettway is poised for a strong senior season, currently tipping the scales at 230-pounds.

Vigor linebacker Deshaun Davis sits at No. 16 after a spring injury kept him out of the camp circuit. Davis isn't expected to return next fall.

Alabama's commitments among the ranked state prospects are second-ranked Bo Scarbrough, running back from Tuscaloosa County. Fourth-ranked Shaun Dion Hamilton, linebacker from Carver-Montgomery, and tenth-ranked Stephen Roberts, corner from Opelika.

Behind Humphrey, Oxford running back Racean Thomas at No. 5, Calera athlete Ronnie Clark at No. 6 and Auburn linebacker Rashaan Evans at No. 9 are the top remaining uncommitted prospects. Auburn has made strong pushes for both Thomas and Evans this spring, and is attempting to make up ground with Clark, who appears to be favoring Alabama.

Prospects that became better known quantities this spring are Jackson linebacker Gavin Bryant (No. 15), McAdory defensive end Cory Thomas (No. 18), Florence offensive lineman Cole Hardin (No. 19), Faith Academy quarterback Malik Rosier (No. 22) and Carver-Montgomery receiver Charles Standberry (No. 23).

"Cory Thomas, Cole Hardin and Malik Rosier caught my eye," Codrington said. "All three have a chance to be BCS caliber contributors at the next level. Hardin was a pleasant surprise and one of the nastiest offensive linemen we saw all spring."
