Thompson calls the Hogs

Arkansas head coach Mike Anderson has landed another top in-state target for the Class of 2014.

Forrest City (Ark.) head coach Dwight Lofton confirmed 2014 power forward Trey Thompson's pledge to the Razorbacks at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

"We talked and he just felt that Arkansas is the place for him to be," Lofton said. "He has verbally committed.

"Coach Anderson didn't find out until this morning, but he was very glad. One of his priorities was keeping the best players in Arkansas. Trey and Anton (Beard) really confirm that for the Class of 2014."

The 6-9, 240-pound forward turned down offers from Florida, Memphis, Mississippi State, and a couple other SEC schools that came into the picture late.

"Tennessee came on hard," Lofton said. "I'll tell you who really came on was LSU. They came at him hard real late. But at the end of the day, I think Trey always knew where his heart was, and he wanted to represent the state of Arkansas."

Lofton believes the Hogs picked up a big-time player who can do a number of different things on the court.

"The way I describe Trey, you know a lot of times is you have players who are great from the shoulders down," Lofton said. "One thing that separates Trey is he's great from the shoulders up.

"He understands the game, he's extremely unselfish, and he's the type of kid that'll do whatever's necessary for the team to win. He's not coming in with this, 'I've got to score 20, 25,' because that's not his game.

"This year he averaged over 16 points per game, he averaged right around 9 rebounds, and another great thing about Trey is he averaged about 5 assists per game.

"He does the ol' 'Oliver Miller rush it about of bounds, throw it down the floor' move better than anybody I've seen since Oliver Miller. They're streaking and he's got that into an art form."

Thompson joins North Little Rock's Anton Beard as the second in-state commitment in Arkansas' 2014 haul.
