With Spring football taking up the headlines and basketball season in the rear view. It is easy to forget that the NCAA recruiting war for basketball prospects is not yet over. WKU has had their eye on a couple of new guys recently. One managed to be caught on campus for a visit last week.
Daouda Soumaoro is a 6'9" sophomore from Iowa Western Community College. Soumaoro hails from Bamako, Mali and played his high school ball at Our Savior New American School in Centereach, NY where he helped lead the Pioneers to the most wins in the schools recent history. While in high school Soumaoro averaged 12.5 pts, 8.3 reb, and 3.3 blocks per game as a senior. He is also graced with a 7'2" wingspan and from all reports, works well in a transition type of game.
Soumaoro was able to garner national recruitment in high school. He committed to Texas Tech and former UK coach Billie Gillespie. Programs such as Washington, Maryland, St Johns, and Tennessee also pursued him heavily. His time in Lubbock never fully materialized and Soumaoro ended up at Iowa Western spending his first season as a redshirt freshman nursing a torn ACL he suffered in early October of 2011.
The 2012-2013 season marked his debut to college basketball. He started the first 12 games for Iowa Western averaging 12.4 ppg and 7.8 rpg to lead his team in both categories. He freshman season was then cut short when he suffered another season ending ACL injury.
Daouda Soumaoro in addition to being pursued by the Tops, reportedly has an offer from future CUSA mate Old Dominion, as well as garnering interest from Villanova.
