Cioffi's playoff run continues

In won't be long before Dayton High senior Anthony Cioffi will be manning the defensive backfield at Rutgers. Before that career begins, he his looking to put an exclamation point on the end of another career.

From the point guard position, Cioffi has led his Dayton basketball squad to a pair of playoff wins as the No.1 seed in the North 2 Group 1 bracket.

"My sophomore year, we were ranked No.1 as well," Cioffi said. "We made it all the way to the championship at The RAC but we lost. We're trying to get back there this year. We just have chemistry. We've all been playing since we were in the sixth grade together."

Cioffi's latest contribution to a Dayton playoff victory came last night when he dropped 13 points, seven assists and five rebounds in a 73-67 overtime win over Newark Vocational.

Next up for Cioffi and company is a Saturday semi-final matchup against fourth-seeded Dunellen.

Less than a month ago, Cioffi signed his national letter of intent to play football at Rutgers. But with such a busy basketball schedule, he hasn't been able to get back on the Rutgers campus over the past month.

"I haven't had much time. As soon as basketball is over I will have more time to get down there," he said.

Once the hoops season wraps up, Cioffi will also begin training regimen sent to him by Rutgers after he officially became part of its program on signing day.

"I did most of that stuff with Joe Jacoby when I lifted with him," Cioffi said. "But now it's going to be a little more rigorous. I'm kind of used to it, but I'm eager to see how it is."

Now that Cioffi has signed, he mentioned what the last few weeks have been like as an official Scarlet Knight.

"It's been nothing but good, everybody has been embracing it now that I've signed. A lot of people are happy for me. In school now, everyone knows. Before, some teachers didn't even know. They knew I was a good football player but now they all know and everybody has been congratulating me."
