Bowers commits to Spartans
Mark Dantonio and the Michigan State staff got some good news earlier today when defensive end Robert Bowers of Walnuts Hills High School in Ohio committed to the Spartans. We have some details on the newest member of the Green and White.
As SpartanMag.com reported earlier in the the week, Bowers was in East Lansing this morning checking out the first practice of the year for Michigan State. Shortly afterwards he decided to pull the trigger and become a member of the Spartans class of 2014.
Bowers sent a text stating, "Yes I am a Spartan"
Bowers, who is rated a 3-star recruit by Rivals.com selected Michigan State over a impressive lost of other offers. In addition to Michigan State, Bowers also had scholarship offers from Purdue, Minnesota, Kentucky, West Virginia, Cincinnati and Louisville.
Bowers has been to Michigan State on several occasions and he came into the visit today just looking to confirm that East Lansing is the place for him.
"Michigan State feels like home," Bowers said. "When I am there they treat me very well and make me feel like family. I really love everything about it."
Michigan State is looking for defensive ends that excel at rushing the passer and that is what Bowers is known for. The past two season he has racked up over 20 sacks despite often facing double-teams and quarterbacks rolling away from his side.
SpartnaMag.com asked Bowers about the reaction he received from the Michigan State Coaches when he told them he was committing.
"The coaches were all very happy," Bowers said. "They kept telling me that I am going to be a very good player at Michigan State."
Bowewrs becomes the 14th commitment for the class of 2014, the Spartan are expected to take a class of around 21-22 players depending on attrition. He also is the 4th recruit from Ohio to select Michigan State. He joins DB Vaynate Copeland, LB Chris Frey and QB Chris Durkin to form a solid core of Ohio Spartans.
