First year player has Oregon interested
For Oregon's recruiting class of 2014, one of the biggest areas of need is defensive tackle. Without many prospects available at the position, the Ducks have their work cut out for themselves identifying talent for the trenches.
One place their search has led them is to Chula Vista (Calif.) and the campus of Southwestern College. There they have found a diamond-in-the-rough: Alfonso Hampton.
Not many coaches have heard of Hampton. The 6-foot-5, 295-pound Southwestern freshman never played football in high school. His first year of organized football was the 2012 season.
"I really didn't play in high school," said Hampton. "I tried it for a couple weeks and really had a lack of interest in sports and I guess school in general. My actual first year of playing was last year for Southwestern."
