Spartan target making the rounds

One of the players that Michigan State is very interested in for the class of 2014 is defensive back Darius West of Lima Catholic High School in Ohio. The 5-foot-11, 197-pound prospect has an impressive list of scholarships and one from Michigan State could come his way very soon.

Back in 2011 when Michigan State was watching their future quarterback Tyler O'Connor in action they took notice of sophomore Darius West making plays. Since that time the Spartan staff has kept in contact with the 4-star recruit and he is now one of the top prospects in the Buckeye State for 2014.

West has been picking up offers at an impressive clip the past few months and he updated us on the schools that have extended him a scholarship most recently.

"The most recent schools to offer are Missouri, Minnesota, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech," West stated. "I received those in the lat 3 weeks."

Those schools join teams such as Purdue, Penn State, West Virginia, Illinois and Indiana as having offered. West now has over 15 scholarships and he could pick up a few additional ones as he hits the road over the next few weeks. West talked about his travel plans for the future.

"I am going to Michigan Friday and Notre Dame on Saturday," West said. "Then I am going to go to see Michigan State, Indiana, Kentucky Ohio State, Purdue, Penn State, West Virginia and Louisville."

West will likely stop into East Lansing for a session of spring practice. That will allow him to see Coach Harlon Barnett and Coach Pat Narduzzi coaching the Spartan defense. It is possible that West will leave Michigan State with some good news.

"Coach Tressel said whenever I come up they are going to offer," West said. "Coach Dantonio just wants to meet me in person first."

An offer from Michigan State will get serious consideration from West. He is well aware of the level of play of the Michigan State defense and how the last few seasons the Spartans have produced multiple All-Big Ten performers at his position.

As far as when West plans on making a decision and what he is looking for in a college, West provided us with the following information.

"I could make it either before or after my season, I am not sure yet," he said. "The things I am looking for are good coaches, academics, a big family atmosphere, the players, and if it feels like home."

One positive aspect for Michigan State in West's recruitment is the fact that he will be able to get straight answers from O'Connor about what he can expect if he does decide to become a Spartan. Having a former teammate who can cut through all of the recritng-speak is always appreciated by recruits. was able to observe West at the Best of the Midwest Camp held in Indianapolis back in February. At that even he was one of the top overall performers and excelled in both the drill and testing phases. His 40-yard dash and standing broad jump were two of the best scores among the over 250 athletes in attendance.

West will likely be attending a few more camps and combines late this spring. Much will depend on his travel plans as far as college visits. will be sure to follow his recruitment over the coming weeks. We will report if he does receive a scholarship and where Michigan State stands.
