Practice Insider: O'Dowd hopes to play Saturday
Saturday, Kristofer O'Dowd had to sit and watch the USC offensive line turn in a flat-out dominant performance in the season opener, and he had to cope with the prospect that things could, and did, go just fine without him.
"I would hope (they miss me)," O'Dowd said with as much of a whimper as a 300-pound center can muster. "I thought we were all boys."
O'Dowd was joking. He knows that USC has the kind of depth to sustain a hit like the one it suffered when he went down with a dislocated kneecap three weeks ago. Without their all-Pac-10 center, the USC line still managed to help USC rush for 342 yards and allowed the Trojan quarterbacks to being sacked just twice.
"It just shows us how great and versatile our offensive line is. We have a strong class of guy. Every guy can play pretty much every position of the line," O'Dowd said. "Things like this happen. Guys get injured. I'm fighting my way back up the roster; same with everyone else who started on Saturday. It's back to competition, which is what we're all about."
