10 Impact Signees: Terrence Cody
With Alabama drawing the Rivals.com No.1-ranked signing class in the nation last February, anticipation runs high among fans waiting to see how an especially gifted group of newcomers melds with a group of veterans with some obvious depth concerns. BamaOnLine.com bridges the 'dog days' of summer with a countdown of 10 signees - published in ascending order - who could have the most impact on the 2008 season. The listing is influenced by the Crimson Tide's depth at the positions they are expected to play, not just prep credentials.#9 - Terrence Cody
Position: Defensive line.
Size: 6-5, 380 pounds.
High school: Ft. Myers Riverdale (signed out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College).
The film room: The ease with which Cody forces blockers to retreat is what stands out here, particularly in passing situations. Double-teamed routinely on running plays, offenses occasionally tried to single-block Cody on pass plays, and the pocket collapses quickly. Cody will have to learn to play lower and with more leverage at the point of attack, but his sheer size commands the double teams Alabama needs in its run-stopping efforts from the 3-4 scheme.
Climbing the depth chart: Cody would rank higher than No.9 if the Crimson Tide were as short-handed at noseguard as it is at some other positions. But with Lorenzo Washington coming off a solid season, and youngster Josh Chapman showing impressively in spring drills, Cody has his work cut out for him. Washington is built more like a 4-3 tackle and did not frequently command a double-team last year, but he is quick off the ball and was a steady contributor. It also remains to be seen where the UA staff will place Brian Motley, who moved from noseguard to the offensive line for the final week of the spring.
What will make it tough: Reports from MGCCC were that Cody regularly finishes drills and has no cramping or hydration problems despite his massive weight. Still, it is difficult to imagine a player of that size enduring a Nick Saban camp without some difficulty. Cody's arrival to campus for the first summer term was of great benefit in his effort to drop some weight and report to camp in the best possible shape, but it remains to be seen where he will tip the scales when camp opens in five weeks.
Tim Watts' take: "xxx."
