From the Film Room: Five to watch
The rankings process for the 2009 class is well underway and Rivals.com recruiting analysts have already logged countless hours in the film room evaluating prospects from all over the country.
Rivals.com's Barry Every breaks down some of the names to remember for next season from some of the stacks of film he has evaluated and gives a preview to where they might be ranked.
Film Room Standouts
Randall Carroll, 5-11, 175, WR, Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral
Carroll in action
What was impressive about him on video? He looked incredibly tough and self confident on film.
Needs improvement: He is just a tad stiff; perhaps working on agilities will help this.
Conclusion: He is listed as a receiver and he could easily play the position at USC, but if he was my player I'd give him a crack at cornerback. He is tough, and has the cockiness to be out on an island by himself.
Ranking status: He is easily a four star at the 5.9 level.
Current offers: Held offers from USC, UCLA, California, and Arizona State before committing to the Trojans.
Xavier Nixon, 6-6, 275, OT, Fayetteville (N.C.) Jack Britt
Nixon in action
What was impressive about him on video? Uses his hands well and keeps his feet churning after contact.
Needs improvement: He is currently around 270 pounds and he will need to gain at least 20 pounds in order to shove D-I defensive ends around.
Conclusion: He will most likely be the most heavily recruited player in North Carolina this year.
Ranking status: I like him as a four star at 5.9.
Current offers: Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Tennessee.
Edwin Baker, 5-10, 195, RB, Oak Park, Mich.
Baker in action
What was impressive about him on video? He changes gears well, and looks solidly put together.
Needs improvement: He only played in six games last year. It will be interesting to see if he can pick up where he left off.
Conclusion: He was another pleasant surprise on film and an excellent pickup for the Spartans.
Ranking status: A definite four-star, either a 5.8 or 5.9 based on junior tape.
Current offers: Michigan State, Purdue, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa and Michigan all had offered before his commitment to the Spartans.
De'Antwan Williams, 5-7, 207, RB, Woodbridge (Va.) Woodbridge Senior
Williams in action
What was impressive about him on video? He looks really put together; and demonstrated very good hands out of the backfield.
Needs improvement: Being only around 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8, he will need to watch his weight.
Conclusion: I really like this kid's toughness and he should fit into almost any offense as an every down back.
Ranking status: He should start at four stars at around 5.8 and will be a definite Rivals250 candidate.
Current offers: Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Dorian Bell, 6-1, 200, LB, Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway
Bell in action
What was impressive about him on video? He demonstrated great closing speed and great quickness.
Needs improvement: He is listed at 6 feet 1 and 205 pounds. He will need to put on at least 20 pounds in order to inflict the same damage on opponents at the next level.
Conclusion: We have him currently listed as an ILB, but I think he could also be a weak side linebacker in college. He will more than likely be the highest rated player in Pennsylvania this year.
Ranking status: If he is really at least 6 feet tall, then he deserves every bit of his five-star ranking.
Current offers: Alabama, Boston College, Florida State, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Tennessee and West Virginia.
