Arizona coaches land a big one in Negedu

Heading into the 2008 recruiting season, Arizona was in desperate need for a couple capable big men. Without two high caliber posts, regardless of who else the UA signed, the class wouldn't be seen as a success.

That's why the first commitment of the class was such an important one. On May 1, 6-foot-6, 225-pound Wolfeboro (N.H.) Brewster Academy power forward Emmanuel Negedu chose the Wildcats over offers from schools such as Florida, Ohio State, Kansas and Tennessee, among several others.

A few days before being named to the UA coaching staff, Kevin O'Neill met Arizona assistant Josh Pastner in Akron (Ohio) to watch Negedu play at the King James Shooting Stars Classic AAU event.

The other UA coaches were in Las Vegas for the Spring Showcase, but O'Neill was yet to be named to the staff, making his appearance in Ohio legal, as only three of four coaches are allowed to be on the road recruiting at once, per NCAA rules.
