Smelley Likely To Get Starting QB Nod

Redshirt freshman Chris Smelley, who has started the last four games, will 'in all likelihood,' start at quarterback for South Carolina in Saturday night's key SEC clash (7:45 p.m., ESPN) against Tennessee at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville.

It would be Smelley's second career start on the road. He's 4-1 as a starter this season, with the only loss coming last weekend in a disappointing 17-6 loss to Vanderbilt.

Smelley led USC to a 21-15 victory over North Carolina in his first career road start two weeks ago, firing a career-high three touchdown passes.

Smelley has completed 56.7 percent (89-of-157) of his passes this season for 1,136 yards and nine touchdowns with six interceptions.

It was those numbers that convinced Steve Spurrier to award Smelley the start ahead of fifth-year senior Blake Mitchell, who made his first appearance in four games last week against Vanderbilt.
