Rutgers to launch $295M building project; outgoing president hired as professor

Long Rutgers board meeting ends with short protest over tuition costs and restructuring plan

Really kids? I know low tuition is a popular topic, but was this the week to muddle our message. You think your tuition is high now? Wait until Norcross starts funding his empire with your tuition dollars, since he can't borrow from the banks and Trenton won't send more bucks. Today the best thing you can do to keep tuition reasonable would be to stop the merger/dismemberment.

The protesters had ample opportunity to make their voices heard at the appropriate meetings. If they truly cared about the issues, they would make their points at those times. However, they don't care about being effective voices, they just care about getting things done on their own timeline, rather than at the timeline for maximum effect.

They are the prime example of students who will be at Rutgers for 4 years, and then forget about the school as soon as they graduate.

People care about their own issues. Student debt is a personal issue but without straying into current events board territory it's a national issue at this point. I can't blame them for protesting about it.

I do think this points to an issue though that I've mentioned- people in NB (justifiably) are not particularly concerned with Camden campus. The University (again) has failed to properly state the issue as the state trying to allow the Rutgers name to be spread without giving the University proper control. That is what could get the entire community engaged.

The presentation to the current students and alums is focused on the Camden alums. Reading what they put out someone who doesn't read this board or newspaper articles with a fine tooth comb could easily come to the conclusion that the NB campus is unaffected but for acquiring RWJ.

The people protesting the tuition hike were also protesting the Camden merger. The way the trustees are combating this merger is reassuring to me. It goes to show that there is some competency at Rutgers.

And the reporting on the meeting mentioned that the students were from all three Rutgers campuses.

"Rutgers students are graduating with over $20,000 in debt and our legislators focus on unproductive issues like the takeover of Rutgers-Camden," the students said in one voice, before leaving peacefully.

That is what I was talking about.

Sounds accurate to me. In fact I think whether they intended or not, it sums it up nicely - NJ higher ed is broken and the proposed fix is unproductive.
