...was going for some coffee at the Hyatt last Sunday morning before checking out to head home to California. In the lobby were six young attractive women who called out to me...."Hey, Rutgers" as I was wearing "the colors".

I went over to them and each, in turn smiled and introduced themselves. One was Chelsea Newton, another was Monique Oliver...the third was a new freshman (I believe Shaleena Richardson -- cute as a button)...one was a recruit on her official visit along with her mom.

We chatted for about 20 minutes and let me tell you....our gals are impressive!! Well spoken, friendly, vivasious. Chelsea asked me when I had graduated...."'78, ,80?" When I told them the 200th Anniversary class...ie. '66 each actually looked a bit taken aback (which, by the way, for the male ego is really, really good) four of them commented that they were surprised. Guess CVS has made an impression on PR????

As I finally rose to leave one asked..."will you be in Denver in March?" I guess the question through me a bit and I looked perplexed. "We'll be there...that is the Final Four and we WILL be there." I simply stated that when you are there, I will be as well....the response to which was, "we'll remember you and you will have a seat behind the bench!"

These gals are just special...it lessened the pain of Saturday's football game and made my trek home across country a bit more pleasant.

Ariel Butts?

Posted on 11/1 9:42 PM | IP: Logged

cool

CalRU66 is a special guy. Even the RU ladies know it.

GREAT story Rolf! Thanks, too.

Posted on 11/1 9:43 PM | IP: Logged

Could it have been Hollivay?

Posted on 11/1 9:46 PM | IP: Logged

Very nice.

Posted on 11/1 10:08 PM | IP: Logged

Rolf, sorry I missed you this time around, but that is wonderful and I will make sure I look you up in Denver in March.

Posted on 11/1 11:26 PM | IP: Logged

Rolf:
First, I'm sorry that I missed seeing you this weekend. :-(
You are absolutely right - they are definitely special!
I'll bet it was Mo who called out to you... she's a lot of fun, and definitely not shy! 3dGrin

regarding other comments...
Ariel? Maybe, I hope so
Hollivay? No, I'm pretty sure that her visit was the weekend of the 14th.

I echo Scarletwoman's post. I read your posts on FB board all the time. You are a voice of sanity in the craziness there. you should continue to visit here as we a are a tight knit group who love the Women's team. It is the most successful program at RU.

Hope to see you here more frequently. If you are looking for a nice trip, San Juan right after Thanksgiving would be nice. You can catch two games with the young ladies you met last weekend.

+1

The best kind of post there is. I love the up-close-and-personal side of being a fan.

(I guess that's why I "follow" the team members on twitter. Over time, one really gets a sense of each of their personalities.)

P.S. "The Bicentennial Class" I haven't thought about that in a long time. I remember those words are on my class ring (stuck in a draw somewhere).

Posted on 11/2 8:19 AM | IP: Logged

I read where Ariel was to visit on November 4th while Rachael visited on October 14th along with Precious. Breanna Mcdonald was said to be scheduled for October 21 and just committed to Georgia Tech in her home state. I believe that Kahleah Copper, a wing who lives in Philly and is ranked #17 has us in her final five so it could have been her. Are you referring to the weekend of Oct 22 or 29th?

Can you describe the recruit...was she close to seven feet LOL??? Seriously, most of these girls look tall compared to most of us!!

I think it is important for CVS to sign two more in this class (in addition to Precious), which would give us eleven for next season assuming everyone stays healthy. The unidentified recruit could also have been someone from the 2013 class or beyond on an unofficial visit.

MC1974: CalRU66 (someone who is no stranger to snow) was here for the freak snowstorm... I think Copper made an unexpected visit during the 10/22 weekend. :-)

Posted on 11/2 11:24 AM | IP: Logged

Thanks Diana! I assumed Cal's visit was this past weekend.

Copper would be a very big help to this team, I really hope she signs with RU.

My understanding is, a scholarship may be offerred at any time, regardless of any visits made or scheduled. A visit, official or unofficial, is not required for an offer. A visit of any type may or may not result in an offer. An offer can be accepted during a visit, or it may not. Also, a visit is sometimes made after an offer and acceptance is made.

To me, the fact that an official visit is carried out means that the school is under serious consideration by the recruit and that the school is most likely among five or less finalists. Also, an acceptance (verbal) can be made and kept a secret between the recruit and coach. Some recruits like to wait and see if another recruit in particular accepts an offer or accepts at another school.

And on and on it goes. Diana, I think you are misinterpreting me. I know that visits are scheduled and some are changed or dropped. It seems that Rutgers is one of the few schools with large fan forums that is kept in the dark about visits.

Again, my point: If Copper cancelled her scheduled visit, but visited the RU campus afterwards (Oct 22), how can you conclude that she will probably not pick Rutgers based on that information?

Posted on 11/2 4:30 PM | IP: Logged

dmd78, Could the failure to make an offer be (in some cases) because we have a verbal from someone who plays the same position. I kind of sense your hesitance to elaborate on this issue, so you may not if choose to do so. I'm just trying to understand why?

Posted on 11/2 6:30 PM | IP: Logged

Thanks for the compliment RUAlways4ever! Those gals were really special...and made my weekend! If I weren't happily married...watch out. Just kidding...a bit.

But the smiles, the confidence...if that alone does not drive you then you have to go home and kick the dog and in my case...with the smallest being 125 lbs then I would not have a leg left to stand on.roll

You know, Scarletwoman, I tramped the Scarlet lot time and again looking for your tailgate just to give you a hug. RutgersAl told me where to go but I guess the snow kept getting in my eyes!!! Had to eventually go to sit with Tim upstairs but that was not the same as getting my long awaited peck on the cheek!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on 11/2 7:02 PM | IP: Logged

The "Bicentennial Class"? Gad, I recalled that so vividly when just last Spring the announcement came out that the graduation would be the first to be held at the Stadium. How can we forget so soon in May of 1966 the parade of banners and pomp and circumstance in the old stadium of representative from ALL the major universities throughout the world whose entrance lasted over 25 minutes alone???

Now...back the the ladies. They will be really special this year. I am so looking forward to each game.

Posted on 11/2 7:07 PM | IP: Logged

Diana...my only loss this weekend was not getting my annual hug....you now owe me two!!! Just don't shout in my ear "Go RU" because I do not yet need hearing aids.Eek

The smiles, hugs and other stuff from our ladies just overcame me that I cannot remember the recruits name at this time. She was a "big" defintely...but very shy as I would expect. I just merely welcomed her to the Banks if that would be here choice and then gestured to the other great company and said...merely family.

Alas, Rolf, I do not tailgate in the Scarlet lot anymore. I am in the Audi Club lounge. These old bones can't take the type of weather that Saturday brought. I did it for twenty years and cannot do anymore. I hoped to see you in the Audi lounge but if you were there we missed each other. Maybe Denver or next year.

Posted on 11/2 8:25 PM | IP: Logged

Sorry, Scarletwoman...thought Al said you would have the tent up in the Scarlet Lot. I was in TimP's lounge that day and really sorry I missed you!!!

When, one day, we actually will get together it will be a union of dear, dear old friends...and let the best of the old bones prevail~!

Posted on 11/2 8:41 PM | IP: Logged

You got it!

Posted on 11/2 8:46 PM | IP: Logged

Again: R.I.P Rolf. It was great knowing you for a while, and will miss you.

just rereading this thread now after hearing about the loss of CalRU66 ... can't believe it was from less than a month ago :(

I am sure CalRU66 will be following the ladies basketball team and all other Scarlet Knights from above

Posted on 11/30 11:18 PM | IP: Logged

I think it was CalRU66 who was the first to respond to my first post on this board many years ago.

Hopefully cal's prediction will come true(final 4) too bad he wont be around to see it r.i.p.

Posted on 12/2 1:32 PM | IP: Logged

I have been thinking of Rolf all week and I know he is so happy for RU with the happenings this week. I had to reread this after tonight's game because he spoke of meeting these young women who he felt were so poised and confident and they showed it tonight. Kudos to you Rolf for seeing this in them. I do miss you and our conversations.
