August 14, 2012There is a new pecking order at the tight end position with a new starter and one less player at the position as one former Scarlet Knight has decided to leave the program.
"Malcolm Bush has decided that he wants to transfer and maybe look for an opportunity to get on the field maybe a little quicker," head coach Kyle Flood announced following today's practice.
This was set to be Bush's fourth year in the program. After redshirting his first year, he appeared in one game in 2010 and then in two games last season.
He did not register any stats in those brief appearances.
Bush has been behind Paul Carrezola and D.C. Jefferson on the depth chart during the past few years, but this summer he had to contend with redshirt freshman Tyler Kroft as well.
Kroft has shown a lot of promise through the early going and has earned reps with the second and first-team offense.
"Tyler does a nice job of catching the ball. He's a willing blocker," Flood said. "I don't know he's the guy we want to line up with on the line of scrimmage right now but I think he's working his way there. I think the future's bright for him."
Kroft is currently the No.3 tight end behind Jefferson and a bit of a surprise starter.
"Right now Paul is our starter, D.C is our second and then Tyler will be our third and then Beau Bachety will be our fourth," Flood revealed.
Jefferson came into camp at a trim 244 pounds, but is still recovering from off season ankle surgery which kept him out of spring practice.
"I think D.C. is still working himself into shape," Flood said. "Whether or not that continues will be determined by how Paul can raise the level of his game and the consistency D.C. will bring to the game. Paul is the more consistent producer and performer in training camp right now and that's why he's there."
The battle between Jefferson Carrezola should continue through training camp and looks to be one of the more intriguing storylines of the summer.
