Season Preview: Deepest RB group in a decade
Open Arizona State's 2006 media guide and you'll see that Dirk Koetter said, "As a unit, the running back position might have the biggest upside on the entire team." After watching this group in action throughout fall camp, we'd have to say that not only do we agree with that statement, but we think this might be the best collection of talent at the position since the 1996 Rose Bowl team when the program had Terry Battle, Michael Martin, Marlon Farlow and then-freshman J.R. Redmond.
The leader of the group is Keegan Herring, who is coming off a season in which he was the top freshman rusher in the Pac-10, and he finished ninth overall in the conference in yardage with 870 yards on 158 carries (5.5 yard per carry) and six touchdowns.
