LB Frey has great visit to State
Last week Head Coach Mark Dantonio decided he did not need to wait to see linebacker Chris Frey of Upper Arlington High School in Ohio at camp and extended him a scholarship offer. Since that time, numerous other teams have now followed suit by offering and his stock is sky-rocketing. Frey was in East Lansing on Monday and SpartanMag.com has the details
As SpartanMag.com has stated in recent weeks, Frey is one of the most talented linebacker prospects in the Midwest for the class of 2014. He has had several outstanding performances at camps and combines and now holds over a dozen scholarship offers. Frey was in East Lansing on Monday learning more about the Michigan State program and the school itself. He spoke with us about his visit.
"The visit was great, Frey stated. "I loved it there. The coaching staff is great and the facilities are top notch. The new facility will be nice too."
The Spartan, who already have one of the most up to date facilities in the Big Ten are in th process of a $20 Million dollar expansion which will include new locker rooms and a recruiting room for all sports to host top prospects.
The Spartans are looking to re-load at linebacker this year and they already have tow of the best in the Midwest in Deon Drake and Byron Bullough. The addition of a player the caliber of Frey will give Coach Dantonio a stable of young backers that can carry on the tradition that players like Greg Jones, Max Bullough and Denicos Allen have established.
Michigan State has done their homework when it comes to Frey's recruitment. His primary recruiter is actually linebacker coach Mike Tressel and the Spartans not only have seen his highlights, but also worked with him last summer at camp. Frey did alk about the possibility of becoming a Spartan.
"When i was there the coaches talked with me about becoming a Spartan and the fact that I would have a chance to play early there."
The Spartans are loaded at linebacker this year, but they will graduate seniors Max Bullough, Denicos Allen and Kyler Elsworth, in addition Taiwan Jones is a junior. Recent top linebacker recruits such a All-American Lawrence Thomas, 4-star Jamal Lyles and even Riley Bullough are all repping at other positions. The opportunity is there for 2014 signees to make an early impact when they arrive in East Lansing.
Frey indicated last week that he wanted to take a little time and possibly make his decision in July. With that being said he also understands that at some schools scholarships are at a premium and if you really want something you have to jump on it.
Matt Dorsey's Take: Frey grew up in Buckeye Country so he understands the passion that comes with Big Ten football. Under Coach Dantonio the Spartans have instilled a ferocious defense that has been not only been the best on the Big ten, but the driving for victories over teams such as Georgia and TCU that are also known for having great defenses. The old saying goes that Defense wins championships and Frey is the kind of blue-collar player that if he ends up in Green and White should help the Spartans continue to play for the Big ten title on a regular basis.
